Many members of the Kid Lit Community are taking action via this petition at whitehouse.gov, that states:
Every child in America deserves access to an effective school library program. We ask that the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) provide dedicated funding to help support effective school library programs. Such action will ensure more students have access to the resources and tools that constitute a 21st century learning environment. Reductions in school library programs are creating an ‘access gap’ between schools in wealthier communities versus those where there are high levels of poverty. All students should have an equal opportunity to acquire the skills necessary to learn, to participate, and to compete in today’s world.
"The fight for school libraries continues" is how Erica Silverman, SCBWI member, author and librarian put it.
My thanks to Erica and Martha Brockenbrough, SCBWI Team Blog member and author, for sharing this information with me so I can share it with you.
Illustrate and Write On,
Lee

Thanks, I'm sharing it too.
Thanks for your information!
I have been trying for over fifteen minutes to sign this petition. I created an account, am welcomed by name on the site, and still the sign button will not allow me to sign. Any ideas? I hope this is not happening to others.
Hi Bonnie, sorry you're having difficulty signing - evidently, once you sign up, they send you an email and you have to click on the link in that email - THEN you're able to sign.
I got a message that read: IMPORTANT: You have not finished creating your account. You will receive an email from us within a few minutes. You must click on the link in that email to continue.
Hope that's helpful!
Lee
School librarians are the bridge between children's book authors and their readers. I'm on both sides of that bridge as a librarian and an author. The foundation of an effective school library program is a certified library media specialist. It is in the best interest of us all to sign this petition so children learn to love reading through quality books recommended to them by professionals. Take the time, and tell everyone. It is worth the trouble.
